This introductory text is designed to prepare teachers of English as a Second Language to teach speech skills. The first three chapters explore general issues in relation to spoken language and speech instruction. The first chapter examines the nature of spoken language, and why and how we learn our native language. The second focuses on production of spoken language and negotiation of meaning between interlocutors. Chapter 3 gives an overview of key theories of speaking that have informed teaching. The next three chapters offer practical ideas and guidance for teaching. Chapter 4 discusses learner needs. Chapter 5 looks at program planning, sequencing of content, and establishing goals and objectives, and chapter 6 addresses selection of texts. In chapter 7, different types of assessment are outlined, including placement, diagnostic, formative, and achievement testing. The final chapter answers ten commonly asked questions about speech instruction. Most chapters include some pre-reading questions, and some tasks relating to portions of the text are included.
