Casebook of Private Sector Summer Youth Employment Programs. Final Report.
Westat, Inc., Rockville, MD.
This report profiles programs conducted in 19 cities during the summer of 1996 to employ youth in the private sector. In most of the programs, the youth served were disadvantaged; the programs were created or enhanced in order to replace funds that were cut under Title IIB of the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). The report contains 20 chapters. Chapter one provides an overview of the 19 case studies and identifies some of the key themes and patterns that emerged from an analysis of the programs. Each of the remaining chapters describes a program, providing information on the following: program management and funding; enlisting employers to provide job openings; recruitment of youth; preemployment training and orientation of youth; matching youth with job openings; work experience of youth under the program and monitoring of worksites; private sector participation in the Title IIB program; and best practices and lessons learned. Exhibits and program materials are included in the reports.
