Surviving Graduate School Part Time. Graduate Survival Skills.
Pittman, Von
This book is intended as a guide for working adults planning to attend graduate school on a part-time basis. Written in an informal, conversational style, it begins with a review of the development of graduate school as a part-time phenomenon and the changing nature of graduate degrees, and notes that what works for master's degree study may not apply at the doctoral level. Chapters 2 and 3 offer information on such matters as selecting a program, formats for part-time study, the admissions process, distance study and distance education methodologies, and international universities. Chapters 4 and 5 cover such topics as how to plan and prepare for graduate study, checking out facilities, equipment, and the types of classes offered, and reviewing catalogs for possible barriers and regulations. Chapter 6 covers financing, and discusses costs, financial aid, loans, and employer support; and Chapter 7 talks about how to organize one's personal life while attending school part time. Four appendixes list regional and specialized accrediting agencies, reprint the Council of Graduate Schools guidelines, provide references and ordering information for Graduate Record Examination and Graduate Management Admission Tests; and suggest references and World Wide Web sites for financial aid sources. (Most chapters contain references.) (CH)
