Title IX: 25 Years of Progress.
Office for Civil Rights (ED), Washington, DC.
Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, the expectations for women's achievement have risen. This document presents a snapshot of the progress made toward gender equity in education and the barriers remaining. Females have increasingly enrolled in and completed college, obtained a greater number of graduate and professional degrees, participated in athletics, and advanced in terms of educational attainment in comparison with other countries. In addition, three pieces of supporting legislation have been enacted: the Women's Educational Equity Act of 1974; Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; and the 1976 amendments to the Vocational Education Act of 1963. Women now make up the majority of students in higher education and receive the majority of masters degrees. Women are entering business and law schools in record numbers. However, problems persist with regard to sexual harassment, wages equal to those of similarly qualified men, and intercollegiate athletic scholarships. Seven figures are included.
