This KIDS COUNT report examines trends in the status of South Carolina children on a state-wide and county basis. The statistical portrait is based on 32 indicators of well-being, grouped into 6 categories: (1) family (family characteristics, child neglect/abuse); (2) economic status (poverty, mean family income); (3) health (prenatal care, immunization, cigarette smoking); (4) readiness and early school performance (grades 1-3); (5) school achievement (including special education and dropout rate); and (6) adolescent risk behavior (pregnancy, alcohol and drug use). Data are analyzed in detail and summarized in tabular form at the end of each state/county report; tables summarize data for the most recently available year and trends over the last three comparable periods. The report finds that too many children in the state are at risk of not growing up to be self-supporting adults, with 25.1 percent of them in single-parent families, 21.0 percent in poverty, 27.3 percent dropping out of school, and 37.4 percent of high school students using alcohol and 20.7 percent using drugs each month.
