Reaching & Teaching the Kids Today. How Bella Serene, The Teaching Machine, Created Her "Connected Classroom," And You Can Too.
Hoffman, Carol
Teachers are faced with the effects of the fragmentation of the family structure and an increasing number of children who are neglected, misbehave, and have trouble with learning. This book offers a solution to teachers in a system bound by legal educational requirements based on the various labels given children in schools today. The book is divided into 13 chapters. Each chapter has two parts: Part 1 presents a scene or event in a fictitious third-grade class and part 2 discusses innovative teaching materials and techniques. Based on the notion that teachers have not been given a method for connecting various teaching methods to classrooms with such diversity, this book provides links between theme teaching and integrated learning, whole language approach and cooperative grouping, a core curriculum and authentic student performance evaluation, as well as remediation, enrichment, and dealing with misbehavior. The 13 chapters cover the following topics: (1) delivery and assessment of labels; (2) motivation and student behavior; (3) whole language for early elementary; (4) spelling; (5) whole language for intermediate or middle school; (6) specialists; (7) collaboration with other teachers; (8) parent-teacher conferences; (9) adult volunteers; (10) attitudes, values and skills; (11) show-casing students; and (12) promoting cognitive links between grades.
