150 Years of Literacy in Iowa.
Cedar Rapids Community School District, IA.
Developed by students at Harrison Elementary, Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a web site celebrating Iowa's sesquicentennial, this booklet presents a variety of material about literacy in Iowa. The first section of the booklet provides information on professional and state organizations dealing with literacy and presents the school's home page. The next section spotlights literacy, presenting: 15 ways to be a literate person; a survey and data about adults' literacy; interviews with Iowans about what it means to be literate; and adults learning to read and write. The next section of the booklet discuses authors with an Iowa connection, books and historical places in Iowa, a profile of the students who developed the website, and links to other sites of interest. The next section presents historical and background information on schooling in Iowa and the American College Testing organization. The last section of the booklet discusses books--what books the mayor of Cedar Rapids and other citizens of Iowa linked as children, bookstores in Iowa, and books that have an Iowa connection. A 26-item annotated bibliography of children's books, and a 14-item annotated bibliography of children's picture books to share with someone concludes the booklet. (RS)
