What about America's Homeless Children? Hide and Seek. Sage Sourcebooks for the Human Services Series.
Shane, Paul G.
This book aims to present what is known about homeless children and to let the stories of some homeless families make their situations clear. The first part of the book covers the background and social, educational, and health issues of homeless children, with a discussion of causes. Part 2 presents some stories of homeless youth and families, with discussions of what happens to these children as adults and the way the media portray homeless children. Part 3 describes programs and other societal responses to homelessness. Part 4 then provides an analysis and some conclusions about homelessness, and outlines some preventive and relief efforts. The scientific approach underlying the analysis is the Galilean approach of K. Lewin (1935), which means examining a phenomenon dynamically and holistically from its genesis and in its environment. Chapters are titled: (1) "Homeless Children: Who Are They?"; (2) "Social and Educational Issues"; (3) "Health Issues"; (4) "Social Context of Homelessness"; (5) "Unaccompanied Children"; (6) "Families"; (7) "Babies"; (8) "Survivors"; (9) "Through the Camera's Lens"; (10) "Programs for Unaccompanied Youth and Families"; (11) "Societal Responses to Homelessness"; and (12) "Conclusions." (Contains 159 references and lists 29 sources for additional reading and 9 film and video resources.) (SLD)
