Emerging Patterns of Social Demand and University Reform: Through a Glass Darkly. Issues in Higher Education.
Dill, David D., Ed.; Sporn, Barbara, Ed.
This collection of 11 papers provides a review of the changing environment of major universities in Europe and the United States, with emphasis on changes in public policies, and examines the implications of this new environment on the internal organization of universities. The book is cross-national in scope and in the perspective of each contributing author, underscoring the increasing international convergence of public policies affecting higher education and of related university reform. The authors, all internationally acknowledged experts in their fields, focus on universities of Europe and the United States, but the trends discussed are universal. The chapters are: (1) "The Implications of a Postindustrial Environment for the University: An Introduction" (David D. Dill and Barbara Sporn); (2) "An Historical Perspective on the University's Role in Social Development" (Sheldon Rothblatt); (3) "The Stirring of the Prince and the Silence of the Lambs: The Changing Assumptions Beneath Higher Education Policy, Reform, and Society" (Guy Neave); (4) "Mass Higher Education and Social Mobility: A Tenuous Link" (Helga Nowotny); (5) "The University as an Instrument for the Development of Science and Basic Research: The Implications of Mode 2 Science" (Michael Gibbons); (6) "The University as an Instrument for Economic and Business Development: U.S. and European Comparisons (Harvey Goldstein, Gunther Maier, and Michael Luger); (7) "Images of University Structure, Governance, and Leadership: Adaptive Strategies for the New Environment" (Marvin W. Peterson); (8)"Complexity and Differentiation: The Deepening Problem of University Integration" (Burton R. Clark); (9) "The "Marketization" of Higher Education: Reforms and Potential Reforms in Higher Education Finance" (Gareth L. Williams); (10) "The New Context for Academic Quality" (Frans van Vught); and (11) "University 2001: What Will the University of the Twenty-First Century Look Like?" (David D. Dill and Barbara Sporn). (Individual papers contain references.) (PRW)
