Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism: A Manual for Parents and Professionals.
Maurice, Catherine, Ed.; And Others
This manual presents 21 chapters on the use of applied behavior analysis techniques with children who have autism. After an introductory chapter, three chapters consider the choice of an effective treatment, including: "Evaluating Claims about Treatments for Autism" (Gina Green); "Early Behavioral Intervention for Autism: What Does Research Tell Us?" (Gina Green); and "Are Other Treatments Effective?" (Tristram Smith). The following chapter is titled "Selecting Teaching Programs" by Bridget Ann Taylor and Kelly Ann McDonough. Teaching methodology is the topic of the next two chapters: "Teaching New Skills to Young Children with Autism" (Stephen R. Anderson and others), and "Behavioral Analysis and Assessment: The Cornerstone to Effectiveness" (Raymond G. Romanczyk). The next three chapters address the subject of personnel: "Identifying Qualified Professionals in Behavior Analysis" (Gerald L. Shook and Judith E. Favell); "Recruiting, Selecting, and Training Teaching Assistants" (Jack Scott); and "The UCLA Young Autism Model of Service Delivery" (O. Ivar Lovaas). The practical aspects of program organization and funding are considered in "Community-Based Early Intervention for Children with Autism" (Ronald C. Huff) and "Funding the Behavioral Program: Legal Strategies for Parents" (Mark Williamson). Two chapters focus on working with a speech-language pathologist: "Incorporating Speech-Language Therapy into an Applied Behavior Analysis Program" (Robin Parker) and "Strategies for Promoting Language Acquisition in Children with Autism" (Margery Rappaport). The next two chapters are on working with schools: "What Parents Can Expect from Public School Programs" (Andrew Bondy) and "Supported Inclusion" (Susan C. Johnson and others). The last five chapters, targeted to parents, offer answers to commonly asked questions (prepared by Stephen C. Luce and Kathleen Dyer) and four personal accounts by parents: "In Search of Michael" (Margaret Harris); "Rebecca's Story" (Elizabeth Harrington); "Brandon's Journey" (Cyndy Kleinfield-Hayes); and "Peter's Story" (Elizabeth Braxton). (Individual chapters contain references.) (DB)
