Study Abroad and Early Career: Experiences of Former ERASMUS Students. Higher Education Policy Series 35. ERASMUS Monograph No. 21.
Maiworm, Friedhelm; Teichler, Ulrich
A study investigated the impact of the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (ERASMUS) program on former students' study and employment patterns and attitudes. The program was designed to promote international exchange of university students within the European Union. A series of three questionnaires was sent to former program participants during the period 1990-94, with 1,234 respondents to the third survey. An introductory section outlines the study's aims and methods, and a second chapter describes the ERASMUS program, its context and aims, program development over its history, and a profile of the former ERASMUS student. Subsequent chapters present the study's results in these areas: graduation and further study activities; prolongation of the total period of study; graduation; further study activities after graduation; employment and work; major activities after graduation; status of graduates at the third survey; employment status and sector; criteria of graduates when seeking employment; criteria of employers when hiring former ERASMUS students; applications and job offers in foreign countries; international contacts; use of competencies acquired abroad; self-rating of competencies; ways of keeping up contact and language proficiency; retrospective assessment of study abroad; assessment of current professional situation; and general satisfaction. A list of 22 ERASMUS monographs is attached. (MSE)
