An Adult ESL Curriculum.
South Carolina Literacy Resource Center, Columbia.
This curriculum framework for adult literacy was written by 21 South Carolina adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instructors, as submitted to the South Carolina Literacy Resource Center. It is based on current theories in the fields of adult education and second language acquisition and is designed to be flexible so that it may be adapted to other ESL teaching situations across the state. The curriculum reviews who the adult ESL student is and how he/she learns a second language, with specific reference to input, interaction, and motivation and communication as opposed to learning. Units are based on topics of practical interest to ESL students: community resources, culture, education, emergencies, food/restaurant, personal security/accidents, health, personal information, recreation/leisure, shopping, transportation, travel, and work/occupations. Each topic includes situations to practice that include speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks. Each unit also includes a resource sheet, unit grid of situations/settings, and a sample lesson plan that includes warm-up, presentation, focused practice, and communicative practice.
