This report is a product of a 3-year federally funded project examining model education programs for postsecondary students with disabilities funded since 1980 by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. The study sought to identify and share information about strategies of successful projects and exemplary products. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the study which involved evaluating more than 100 project reports, selecting 17 as successful, and identifying specific strategies used by these projects. The second chapter provides a descriptive summary and contact information for each of the 17 selected projects. The report then focuses on specific strategies, grouped into four categories: (1) institutional and community involvement; (2) academic support services; (3) summer transition to college programs; and (4) career development. The chapter on institutional and community involvement discusses outreach strategies used to enlist the support of institutional leaders, faculty, and staff as well as community leaders from public, private, and service organizations. The chapter on academic support services identifies strategies to permit programmatic access or to foster personal student development and thereby increase students' academic success. The chapter on summer programs notes their effectiveness in equipping entering students with needed social and academic skills. The final chapter is on effective career development strategies such as providing work experiences in the community. (DB)
