This curriculum supplement has the following goals: (1) to promote an understanding of the assumptions and values that underlie the free market economy; (2) to articulate the relationship between our economy and contemporary global issues (i.e., environment, poverty, war); and (3) to provide examples of constructive ideas and projects that have been developed to create a more sustainable economy. The curriculum is intended as a supplement to any standard high school economics text and aims to create a framework for examining the ethical implications of economic concepts and the possibilities for reform. The unit consists of seven lesson plans and 15 activities. The lesson plans include the following: (1) "What is Economics?"; (2) "Economic Systems"; (3) "The Market System"; (4)"Competition in the Market"; (5) "National Security, Military Spending & the Federal Budget"; (6) "Converting the Military Economy"; and (7) "Measuring Economic Success."
