Results of surveys completed by students in grades six and nine in the Springfield (Massachusetts) public school system are reported for 1990 through 1995. The report is based on an analysis of responses within user-defined categories of drug use, alcohol use, and nonuse. In 1995, while 72 percent of those in grade 6 responded, only 26 percent of those in grade 9 responded to the survey, continuing a serious decline in responding from the high in 1990 of 82 percent of ninth graders. Sample sizes varied throughout the period, ranging from a low of 453 ninth graders in 1995 to a high of 1,419 sixth graders in 1990. The 1995 sixth-grade sample consisted of 1,291 students. The most definite trend revealed by the surveys is the increased awareness among students of drug activity in schools and neighborhoods. There have always been a few drug users in grade 6 (30 in 1995), but the numbers have remained too small to analyze. In 1990 only 14 percent of ninth graders reported using drugs and alcohol, and in 1995, 22 percent reported such use. Almost one fifth of those who report using drugs drink every day, and all drug users report using alcohol. Marijuana was the most frequently used drug, and its use was increasing.
