Toward the Multicultural University.
Bowser, Benjamin P., Ed.; And Others
This book is about the growing need for a more inclusive curriculum and university. The debate about multicultural education is moved from an ideological debate to the realm of the practical in these selections. The first part of the book outlines the demographic and historic realities that make multiculturalism imperative. The second part gives examples of how selective aspects of North American cultures could be central to curriculum and instruction reform. The final section gives practical suggestions and proposals for improving teaching, administration, and student outcomes. The following selections are included: (1) "Demographic Imperatives for the Future" (Harold L. Hodgkinson); (2) "The Triumphs of Tribalism: The Modern American University as a Reflection of Eurocentric Culture" (William A. King); (3) "Afrocentricity and Multicultural Education: Concept, Challenge, and Contribution" (Maulana Karenga); (4) "America's Racial-Ethnic Cultures: Opposition within a Mythical Melting Pot" (Bonnie L. Mitchell and Joe R. Feagin); (5) "Puerto Rican and Latino(a) Vistas on Culture and Education" (Milga Morales-Nadal); (6) "American Indians (The Minority of Minorities) and Higher Education" (Donald L. Fixico); (7) "Toward a Multicultural University: Using Strategic Planning for Change" (Benjamin P. Bowser and Octave Baker); (8) "Academic Grading and Assessment in a Culturally Diverse University" (Etta R. Hollins); (9) "Using Computers and Telecommunications To Advance Multicultural Education" (Arthur E. Paris); (10) "The Organization of a Multicultural University" (Benjamin P. Bowser); and (11) "Beyond Disciplinary Borders: Creating A Genuine Multicultural Curriculum" (Terry Jones and Gale Auletta Young). A conclusion by Benjamin P. Bowser, Terry Jones, and Gale Auletta Young discusses decentering the European world view. Two tables and 11 figures illustrate these discussions. (SLD)
