This directory is a compilation of entries for nearly 2,500 scholarly discussion lists and 675 electronic journals, newsletters, and related titles such as newsletter-digests, available on the Internet. Instructions are provided for accessing each publication. Part 1 is an introduction to electronic scholarly publications, followed by the articles and bibliographies: "First Steps Toward Electronic Research Communication" (Paul Ginsparg); "Serials in Cyberspace: Collections, Resources, and Services On the Networks" (Birdie MacLennan); "Network-Based Electronic Publishing of Scholarly Works: A Selective Bibliography" (Charles W. Bailey, Jr.); and "Online Newspaper Services" (Steve Outing). Part 2 lists journals and newsletters in alphabetical order, and the entries contain the following information: whether or not it is free; formats; distribution methods; frequency; subscription/access information; back issues; contact information; submissions; URL (Uniform Resource Locator); related list, if any; and issuing agency. In addition, journal entries provide ISSN number, first issue, and A/I (abstracting and indexing) services. Scholarly lists are grouped by the following broad subject areas: education and library and information science; humanities; social sciences; biological sciences; physical sciences; business, economics, publishing and news; and computer science; social, cultural, and political aspects of computers; academic computing support. Part 3 contains information about academic discussion lists and interest groups; entries provide subscription/access information, existence of an editor and archives, moderator name and e-mail address, subscription address, and issuing agency, if any.
