Caring for Children in School-Age Programs. Volumes I and II.
Koralek, Derry G.; And Others
These two volumes constitute a set of modules for an individualized, competency-based training program intended to help the user acquire the skills and knowledge needed to provide a high-quality child care program for school-age children. The modules are intended for use by those just entering school-age care and by those who have been involved in school-age care for many years and want to update their skills and knowledge. Volume 1 consists of the following sections: (1) an Overview chapter, which briefly summarizes the content addressed in the training program, how the training program works, and what makes the training program unique; (2) a glossary; (3) a bibliography of 72 items, subdivided by module topic; (4) a list of 13 publishers and distributors of resources; (5) a self-assessment keyed to the topics of the modules; and (6) an individual training plan form. Six modules follow, on safety, health, program environment, physical development, cognitive development, and communication skills. Each module includes an overview, simulations of situations to which the user is asked to respond, and a pre-training assessment on the topic of the module. Volume 2 includes similar modules on the topics of creativity, self, social development, behavior guidance, families, program management, and professionalism. (DR)
