This report offers data on juvenile drug use and crime so as to increase understanding of the dimensions of drug use among youthful offenders. The report includes information from collaborative efforts at both the Federal and the local levels. Data on male juvenile arrestees and detainees were collected in 12 Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) sites located in large cities throughout the United States. Ten of these sites also collected data on female juvenile arrestees and detainees; however, these statistics are not presented due to the small sample size. Figures were compiled by DUF staff obtaining voluntary urine specimens and from interviews of juvenile arrestees and detainees. Nine of the twelve sites reported small increases in the percentage who tested positive for two or more drugs. The most striking result in the report was the rise in the percentage of juveniles who tested positive for recent use of marijuana. This escalation occurred as rates of cocaine use remained largely unchanged at most sites. Furthermore, those testing positive for marijuana use exhibited different patterns of school attendance than did those who used cocaine. Each site's findings are presented on a one-page format, featuring graphs, percentages, and other indicators of the level and the effects of drug use. (RJM)
