National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan, Tokyo.
This publication summarizes reports from a workshop to share the experience of UNESCO's literacy program and to learn about other effective experiences in literacy available in the region. The opening of the workshop and election of officers is reported. Summaries of the following reports are given: (1) the role of learning centers to achieve education for all; (2) World Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations and Asia-Pacific Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations; and (3) activities of the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan. A report on workshop activities for literacy leaders of the UNESCO Co-Action Learning Centers discusses three topics: participants' expectations; shared experiences on establishment and operation of learning centers, including problems and achievement; and design of ideal learning centers. A summary of discussion and recommendations related to promotion of effective cooperation among various UNESCO Co-Action Learning Centres and the future orientation of the UNESCO Co-Action Learning Centre Program is included. Topics are as follows: the role of UNESCO clubs, associations, and centers in literacy; improvement of UNESCO Co-Action Programs; networking various nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and UNESCO clubs, associations, and centers for literacy; regional information and training scheme; strategy for enhancing NGOs' increasing role in literacy in UNESCO's Education for All Program; and criteria for selection of the projects under the fifth cycle. A Japanese language version of the report is followed by a list of participants. (YLB)
