The College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois, formed an educational and business partnership with four area businesses to design and implement workplace literacy programs targeted to the needs of each business. The project's four objectives were as follows: develop a model of cooperation between a community college and the business community in meeting the needs of the community's adult learners; assess employees' and companies' needs to permit development of appropriate curricula and instructional strategies; develop a model workplace program; and provide workplace skills training and support services to a significant number of eligible employees and develop a plan for ongoing training. Classes were developed and offered in reading/writing, General Educational Development Test preparation, math, and English as a Second Language. At least 83% of supervisors surveyed noted at least some improvement in the skill levels of employees who participated in the classes. (This document begins with a brief project overview.
