Education for Homeless Adults: Strategies for Implementation.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Office of Workplace Preparation and Continuing Education.
This instructional guide is intended for use by adult education teachers who deal with homeless students either on an occasional or an exclusive basis. An introduction defines homelessness, describes how education can help, and offers a mission statement. The second section focuses on what teachers of the homeless need. It defines categories of homelessness, discusses the support teachers need, addresses staff preparation and development, and lists strategies to maximize motivation and minimize obstacles in these areas: outreach and marketing, instruction, retention, and politics. Student outcomes are listed, and suggestions for classroom preparation are made. The third section focuses on the program itself. Topics include social marketing, the target audience, and retention. The fourth section suggests a process to evaluate program outcomes. A 13-item bibliography is followed by 24 sample lessons developed to facilitate independent living and self-determination. Tables group the lessons by goals and learning objectives. Lessons 1-12 focus on goals of self-esteem building, interpersonal skills, and taking responsibility for oneself. Lessons 13-24 focus on higher level skills, such as using resources, goal setting, taking responsibility for health and child care, and job finding. Components of each lesson are a goal, outcome objective, list of instructional materials and resources, and activities. Handouts follow the lessons. (YLB)
