Just the Facts: A Summary of Recent Information on America's Children and Their Families.
National Commission on Children, Washington, DC.
This compilation of extensive facts and figures on topics pertaining to America's children and families is a ready reference for journalists, advocates, and others who need easy access to data on conditions and trends. The book's first nine chapters are: (1) "The Changing American Family"; (2) "Children's Growth and Development"; (3) "Family Income Security"; (4) "Children's Health"; (5) "School Readiness and School Performance"; (6) "Youth at Risk"; (7) "Family Strengths and Supports"; (8) "Vulnerable Children and Families"; and (9) "Public Expenditures for Children." Each of these chapters presents a summary of recent information on the topic and brief descriptions of relevant federal programs, and each chapter includes references in the form of extensive endnotes. The 10th and final chapter summarizes the National Commission on Children's recommendations and is designed to serve as a blueprint for strengthening families and promoting the healthy development of all the nation's children. The approximately 40 recommendations made by the Commission relate to ensuring income security, improving health, increasing educational achievement, preparing adolescents for adulthood, strengthening and supporting families, protecting vulnerable children and their families, making policies and programs work, creating a moral climate for children, and investing in America's future.
