In an effort to determine the needs and perceptions of students and faculty involved in evening and weekend classes at William Rainey Harper College (WRHC) in Palatine, Illinois, surveys were sent to 400 students randomly chosen from 100 course sections taught at WRHC in fall of 1991, and to 767 faculty teaching evening or weekend classes during this same period. A total of 228 faculty and 246 students returned usable surveys for response rates of 30% and 62%, respectively. Among students surveyed, response rates were 82% for evening students and 48% for weekend enrollees. Study findings included the following: (1) among the 20 potential problem areas listed on the faculty survey, no one problem was cited as major by more than 20% of faculty; (2) the most significant problems cited by faculty related to temperature control and student access to the bookstore to acquire required materials; (3) other problems cited by faculty included feeling unsafe, dirty classrooms, and difficulty talking with other faculty; (4) 82% of the student respondents indicated that they took courses during the evenings and weekends because of jobs, personal reasons, or scheduling conflicts, although 74% indicated that they enjoyed taking the courses then; (5) 14% of the student respondents indicated that they did not like the deserted look of the campus, worried about safety, and felt they did not get all the services they should; and (6) student respondents reported being most in need of access to a gym or pool, placement and career information, counseling, and access to the library.
