Tables present dropout data for North Carolina public schools for grades 7 through 12 for local education agencies and technical assistance areas in 1991-92. This was the first year of implementation of the federal dropout data guidelines, which require that a student be counted as a dropout each year that he or she drops out of school. The state, however, has decided to count a student as a dropout only once in the school career. This decision has resulted in calculation of duplicate (federal) and unduplicated (state) rates. Students in grades one through six accounted for 3.28 percent of dropouts in 1991-92, while students below age 16 years comprised 15.28 percent. At age 16 years, the age at which compulsory attendance is not required, the dropout rate reaches 30.68 percent, the highest for any single age group. Black students accounted for 30.18 percent of students in grades 1 through 12, but 36.16 percent of dropouts. American Indian students comprised 1.58 percent of students, but 3.13 percent of dropouts. Asian and Hispanic American dropouts more closely resembled their representation among students (1.70 percent of dropouts and 1.58 percent of students, respectively).
