Fonseca, James W.; Andrews, Alice C.
This volume provides a series of maps and associated narratives showing various aspects of higher education by state. Chapter 1 offers seven maps of key background data (e.g., population, minority populations, and household incomes). Chapter 2, on enrollment, contains 13 maps covering total enrollment, enrollment trends, and enrollment by full- or part-time status and by gender. Chapter 3 contains 16 maps on students and faculty including: ratio of students to population, student characteristics, out- and in-migration, foreign students, degrees conferred, faculty salary, gender comparisons in faculty salary, and student-faculty ratio. Chapter 4 contains eight maps on cultural diversity for Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans, and institutions serving minority populations. Chapter 5, on specialized institutions, contains 7 maps on law, medical, veterinary, and dental schools, and research university characteristics. Chapter 6 contains nine maps on two-year colleges and their enrollment, degrees awarded, tuition, and faculty salaries. Chapter 7 provides data on outcomes of higher education including educational attainment by race and gender and degrees awarded per 10,000 population. Costs at public and private colleges, and state spending for student aid are covered in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 gives the data on financing of higher education including state appropriations, proportion of general expenditures, revenues, and well endowed institutions. The final chapter is a summary. Tables of data supporting the maps are appended. (JB)
