Mastering the Teaching of Adults.
Apps, Jerold W.
This 15-chapter book provides practical advice on teaching adult learners. The introductory chapter discusses the demand for continual learning, information paralysis, and information technology. The second chapter consists of two exercises designed to show adult educators that they know more about teaching adults than they think. Strategies for taking charge of teaching (including assuming responsibility for personal improvement, unlearning, and journal writing) are outlined in chapter 3. Chapter 4 addresses myths about teaching adults. The remaining chapters present specific suggestions regarding the following aspects of teaching adults: thinking as a teacher, developing a basis (belief system) for teaching, understanding adult learners, using teaching tools for providing information and skill training, using teaching tools for developing in-depth understanding, using teaching tools for creating a good learning environment, selecting the right tool, teaching critical thinking, organizing content, making ethical decisions, and assessing quality. Five evaluation forms, a list of 15 references, a partially annotated list of 113 suggested readings, and an index are also included. (MN)
