Speculation and Empiricism in Applied Linguistics.
Davies, Alan
Edinburgh Working Papers in Applied Linguistics, v4 p14-25 1993
This paper contrasts two traditions, one originally seeking applications for theory, the other looking for solutions to problems in foreign language teaching, and finds both valuable. Five applied linguistics topics--curriculum, discourse analysis, systemic linguistics, testing, and second language acquisition--are briefly discussed within this framework. It is concluded that the value of empirical research depends on the quality of conceptual analysis. Contains 13 references. (JL)
