The Middle School Exploratory Vocational Wheel. Models To Demonstrate the Variety of Course Configurations and Combinations of the Exploratory Vocational Wheel To Provide Career Exploration for the Middle Grades.
Florida State Dept. of Education, Tallahassee. Div. of Vocational, Adult, and Community Education.
This document presents eight models of the exploratory vocational wheel for the middle/junior high school and a collection of career development activities designed for infusion in various curriculum areas. The wheel is a scheduling strategy that allows middle schools students to explore elements of several different occupations as classes rotate from course to course, forming the basis for more in-depth learning when students choose full courses of interest to them. Schools could offer the wheel in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade or in all three. Introductory material explains various configurations of the wheel, and diagrams illustrate eight models. A chart and diagram illustrating 12 career clusters, a chart that shows how courses affect the 12 career clusters, and a list of vocational education courses that may be used in the middle school vocational exploratory wheel are also provided. Lesson plans for the career development activities or "best practices" that follow are divided into these subject areas: science, social studies, mathematics, miscellaneous courses (fine arts, student services, vocational education), and language arts. The lesson plans are keyed to the subject area objectives and to career development student competencies. Each lesson plan has these components: topic; list of materials/information needed; steps in the activity, including follow-up, if any; career preparation goals and objectives; subject area objectives; and worksheets or handouts. Appended are program courses standards for six wheels, listing major concepts/content, laboratory activities, special notes, and intended outcomes for each. (YLB)
