What Do I Do When...? How To Achieve Discipline with Dignity in the Classroom.
Mendler, Allen N.
This book offers practical assistance and guidance in exploring how to discipline children in the classroom and in a whole-school setting in a way that is effective and that respects their dignity. Chapter 1 explores misbehavior, covering the basic needs that motivate behavior (capable/successful, caring/belonging, power/control, generosity/helping, and stimulation/fun). Chapter 2 looks at the principles of effective discipline, noting that the key approach involves getting at the reasons or functions of a given maladaptive behavior and formulating a strategy that is likely to work. Chapter 3 examines the process of change, arguing that traditionally all change is expected to come from the student and that educators must broaden their picture of the change process to see that change occurs in ways other than expecting different behavior from the student. Chapter 4 presents effective methods of discipline based on establishing a social contract with students in which students and teachers work together as partners in a discipline plan. Chapter 5 offers advise about how to deal with power struggles between the teacher and student and between students. Chapter 6 reviews some unconventional methods of discipline. Chapter 7 considers working with parents. Chapter 8 suggests approaches to schoolwide discipline. Includes a section with concluding thoughts, and a 26-item bibliography. (JB)
