Making It Work: The First Year's Implementation of an Interdisciplinary Teacher Education Program.
Bloch, Deborah P.; McGarraghy, John
Development and implementation of an interdisciplinary elementary and early childhood teacher education program at Baruch College (New York) was characterized by many internal and external tensions and pressures. One of the important factors which had to be considered was the ethnic diversity of both the college's and the city's student populations and how the teacher education curriculum could respond to and reflect this diversity, especially in its foreign language requirements. This teacher preparation program is unique not only because of its emphasis on a combination of liberal studies and professional courses but also because all aspects of the program are jointly administered by the school of education and the school of liberal arts. This paper outlines the program content and discusses some of the obstacles encountered in implementing the program. Included are a curriculum outline, a fact sheet on student appeals, course selection worksheets, and a description of the humanities capstone course (a methods course). (IAH)
