A discussion of phonetic transcription looks at the weaknesses of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a cumbersome system to use with typewriter and computer keyboards, and offers an alternative. It is noted that the IPA, a system of symbols devised for handwritten transcription, is rarely used by second language teachers or instructional materials writers for explanatory or instructional purposes despite the need for such a tool. It is then proposed that, with a few slight changes, natural English speech can be transcribed with ease, speed, and efficiency if the system uses the standard keyboard, all common symbol uses are limited to a single stroke, lower case letters are used for all of the basic phonemes, and the primary rest position (asdf/jkl;) is reserved for the most frequently used symbols. The proposed system is outlined briefly, its potential for clearly and adequately representing dynamic speech features is reviewed, and a sample passage using the new symbols is presented.
