Activities orales et motivation dans l'etude du vocabulaire d'une langue etrangere (Oral Activities and Motivation in the Study of Vocabulary in a Foreign Language).
Guisset, Marcel
It is argued that vocabulary development is too often ignored in the communicative approach to second language teaching, while a good command of language and pleasure in speaking it require access to the appropriate words. Traditionally, vocabulary development has been accomplished by two complementary techniques: reading and classroom exercises. While reading offers some advantages, exercises allow more experience with different contexts and usage. However, neither technique promotes interaction. The alternative presented here is a series of classroom activities that use competitive teams. Three of the activities are described in detail, with examples provided. They include an acrostic and a mystery word game. All can be developed by the teacher and based on current vocabulary in the curriculum. A brief bibliography is appended. (MSE)
