Improving the Coordination of Treatment Planning between Professional and Paraprofessional Staff at a Residential Center for Adolescent Males by Implementing an Interdisciplinary Team Approach.
Young, Steven C.
This practicum report describes a project designed to increase the level of coordination of treatment planning between professional and paraprofessional staff at a residential treatment and educational facility for 40 adolescent males with learning disabilities or severe emotional disturbances. Three corollary aims were to increase the level of involvement by paraprofessional child care workers in the treatment planning process; to improve communication among the child care workers, professional clinicians, and teachers; and to improve the formal documentation of treatment decisions. Three interdisciplinary teams were formed, composed of staff from the facility's three departments (paraprofessional/milieu, clinical, and school). An interdisciplinary treatment plan was developed that included an assessment tool for identification of presenting problems and 30-day goal sheets for each department. Interviews with all staff members (N=47) were conducted to evaluate goal attainment. Additionally, 10 treatment plans were reviewed to evaluate the new recordkeeping format. Project evaluation indicated achievement of major goals. Only the goal of a reduced number of incident reports regarding client verbal abuse and disrespect of line staff was not achieved. Appendices include a treatment plan form and the questionnaires used to evaluate the project. Includes 37 references. (Author/DB)
