Standardized Tests and Our Children: A Guide to Testing Reform = Los Examenes Estandarizados y Nuestros Ninos: Guia para la Reforma de Examenes Estandarizados.
National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest), Cambridge, MA.
English and Spanish versions of a guide to testing reform are presented. The guide explains alternatives to standardized testing for educational assessment and shows how these new methods of evaluation will improve education. Standardized tests are used for an increasing number of purposes in the school system, but there is no proof that their use has improved schools. Common uses/types of standardized tests include: (1) readiness tests; (2) developmental screening tests; (3) intelligence tests; (4) tracking; and (5) grade promotion. Norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests are discussed, and the flaws inherent in standardized testing are reviewed. Improved ways of evaluating students are briefly discussed, including performance assessments. Suggestions are provided to help promote authentic assessment in the schools. An appendix lists resources available to persons interested in testing reform. The Statement of the Campaign for Genuine Accountability in Education is included. The Campaign maintains that heavy emphasis on standardized, multiple-choice tests is undermining progress toward needed educational reforms in the United States. (SLD)
