A Study of Resource Sharing in the State of Arizona: Optimizing Library Dollars.
Griffiths, Jose-Marie; King, Donald W.
The objectives of the project described in this report were to provide specific, clearly defined options for Arizona libraries to share information and bibliographic resources, propose strategies for implementing the options, and present a phased implementation schedule for implementing them. The report begins with an executive summary which describes the principal study methods, identifies several types of resource sharing, highlights the benefits of resource sharing, profiles the current amount of resource sharing, and recommends strategies for implementing resource sharing in the future. The main body of the report is divided into four sections. Section 1 presents the background of the project, the long-range plan for Arizona libraries, and the methods employed in the project. Information is presented in Section 2 about the status of current interlibrary loan and reference referral services offered by Arizona libraries as well as their technology capabilities. Section 3 provides an economic analysis of interlibrary loan and reference referral, and section 4 discusses options for future resource sharing development. The report concludes with 5 appendixes and 49 tables of survey data. Appendixes include the scope of work from the RFP (request for proposals) from the State of Arizona; a glossary of terms and data collection forms for large and other public libraries, large and other academic libraries, school libraries, and special libraries; a statement of the reliability of the survey; and special analyses of the AILLC (Arizona Interlibrary Loan Center) and the State Reference Center.
