Hispanic Women: Making Their Presence on Campus Less Tenuous.

This report examines experiences that Hispanic women have as college students, faculty members, and administrators. It is based on information from the Project on the Status and Education of Women, published materials, informal interviews with Hispanic women, and results of an informal questionnaire responded to by 37 Hispanic women students, faculty members, and administrators around the country. Information is provided on the numbers of Hispanic students in higher education and their proportion to the rest of the student body, and the numbers of Hispanics currently in faculty and administrative positions in higher education. The ways in which the university culture is at odds with the character of Hispanic interpersonal relationships, forms of communication, and sex-role expectations are also discussed, as well as the on-campus problems of Hispanic women. Numerous recommendations are presented, some of a general nature, some addressed specifically to administrators, and the rest grouped under the following categories: curriculum; faculty; students; institutional data collection; and professional associations and organizations. Two separate sections include information on the varying types of Hispanics that exist and observations concerning the Black Hispanic women.
