Common Competencies: The Promise of Linguistic/Cultural Diversity.
Davis, Margaret, Ed.; O'Brien, Maryann, Ed.
This publication is intended for mainstream teachers and school administrators involved in the education of language minority students, and describes professional competencies necessary to capitalize on the linguistic and cultural strengths inherent in a culturally diverse population. The materials included are designed for both training and evaluation of current practice. An introductory section outlines the educational philosophy and principles underlying the booklet's content and intent. The second section provides information that may help in understanding the process and the difficulties of second language acquisition. Section three discusses the role of the teacher and administrator in the process of acculturation, at both social and linguistic levels. The fourth section offers vignettes of a variety of effective teaching techniques and strategies. Some give insight into a teaching moment, and others describe complex and carefully designed programs. Topics include: enriching the study of humanities; using cross-generational interviewing; engaging the student's interest and acceptance; investigation-based science instruction; peer tutoring in a writing center; bringing culturally diverse students together to share experiences; and keeping student attitudes positive. The final section provides a list of questions teachers can ask themselves in evaluating their classroom and teaching style. Contains 28 references. (MSE)
