Personal and Cultural Education--Looking into Paintings. A Report on the 1986 Packs Study.
Ballard, Angie
This report recounts the findings of a study of people who purchased "Looking into Painting" materials, a learning package developed by the Personal and Cultural Education (PACE) Sector of the Continuing Education area in England's Open University. The package is not part of any course of study leading to a qualification, and there is no formal tutorial support or assessment methods. The commissioned study was conducted to provide information about: (1) the purchasers and users; (2) where purchasers learned about the package; (3) reasons for purchase and pattern of use; (4) reactions to the materials; (5) reactions to the television programs; (6) customers' future plans about purchasing other materials; and (7) how some people use these materials in their work. With 408 respondents, the study found that this multi-media package was successfully used by a wide mix of people with differing objectives. Users praised the package's thematic approach and felt that using the package led to a greater appreciation of the critical appraisal of paintings and gallery visiting. Several said that it provided a stepping-stone for them into abstract art. The book was the most frequently used element and the gallery visiting card the least. Some purchasers complained about the delay in receiving the materials and the poor color quality and size of the postcards. The report includes a summary of the conclusions and a copy of the questionnaire sent to the purchasers. (KM)
