This instructional module was designed for certified nurse assistants (CNA). This voluntary training program was developed as a "continuing education" option for the practicing graduate CNA with the intention of providing CNAs with the requisite knowledge and skills to provide care for the confused elderly resident in a long-term care facility. The guide contains eight lesson plans grouped into six units covering the following: overview of dementia, communication, special care needs, family dynamics, stress, and special resources. Each lesson consists of the following components: scope of unit; lesson objectives; information assignment; references; introduction; outline; summary and conclusion; interaction items; classroom/laboratory activities; and evaluation items with answer key. The module also contains a pretest, a posttest, a bibliography, and a resource list. (KC)
