Organizing a Program To Increase Fitness Levels in Fourth Grade Students.
Bell, Warren A.
An experienced physical education teacher designed and implemented an 11-week practicum intervention meant to supplement physical education classes and improve the physical fitness of fourth graders with low scores in areas of the Chrysler/Amateur Athletic Union Fitness Test (C/AAUFT). Particular attention was given to the improvement of test scores in the areas of cardiorespiratory endurance and upper body strength. The practicum also aimed to teach students to take responsibility for developing fitness programs and to initiate self-actualization activities that would meet their needs for good physical fitness. A Runners' Club was organized and a fitness course of 10 stations was constructed. Stations provided a tire run, swinging bars, climbing net, fireman's pole, monkey bars, chin-up bars, parallel bars, vault bar, balance beam, and climbing fence. Fourth grade teachers supervised fitness activities during recess on an every-other-day basis for 10 weeks. Runners' Club awards were provided by local businesses. Practicum evaluation data indicated that the intervention significantly improved students' health-related fitness test scores on the updated, 1988-89 C/AAUFT. Appendices include pretest fitness results, a teacher attitudes survey, an attendance chart, a chart for recording number of laps run, and a list of Runners' Club awards. (RH)
