Organizing a Basic Skills Consortium: The Results of a Meeting.
Lowenstein, Ronnie B.
A one-day meeting of leaders of basic skills organizations was held in order to create a consortium to promote the sharing of ideas and information, assist in the transfer of effective programs and materials, and encourage the joint development of new programs and products to train adults and youth in need. After familiarizing themselves with the issues by reading a summary report, participants completed the following tasks: (1) derived a mission statement of the Basic Skills Consortium Through the States; (2) identified priority activities, including communicating the availability of and access to existing basic skills information, and evaluating programs and products; (3) discussed and reported on key issues such as capacity-building, product development and evaluation, information exchange, and organizational structure; and (4) proposed an action plan that would move the issues discussed by the consortium into an operational phase. A copy of the summary report is attached, as well as a listing of attendees, their addresses, and telephone numbers. (DB)
