Hispanic Encounters for Cross-Cultural and Linguistic Development.
White, Caroline A.
This guide provides information for individuals to use in experiencing Hispanic culture in the United States, using local resources. The guide is designed to aid in developing and carrying out a plan for direct, face-to-face cross-cultural encounters with Hispanics and for developing cross-cultural awareness, self-awareness, and linguistic abilities. The guide is in three parts. The first part concerns theoretical and applied cross-cultural and linguistic concepts and discusses cross-cultural and linguistic terminology, self-awareness, cross-cultural awareness and understanding, language acquisition, cross-cultural training, cultural value orientations, American cultural values, cultural incidents and assimilators, cultural adjustment, and intercultural communication. The second part offers insights on Hispanics in the United States and their various cultures. This section contains Hispanic profiles, Hispanic statistical data, and information about living environment, cultural characteristics and values, and social structures of Hispanics living in the United States. The third part consists of experiential cross-cultural and linguistic guided exercises from which the reader may select to suit his/her own personal experience. The exercises focus on the process of planning, proceeding, experiencing, and assessing. Two bibliographies, one on cross-cultural and linguistic development and the other on Hispanics in the United States, and a list of references are appended. (MSE)
