Livonia Public Schools. Common Threads for the Future. Michigan Exemplary Career Guidance Programs.
Livonia Public Schools, MI.; Western Michigan Univ., Kalamazoo.
Livonia Public Schools' Whitman Center Comprehensive Career Development Program is designed to meet the individual needs of adults aged 16 and over. Program participants are involved in a three-step process: assessment, information diffusion, and placement. A career team--teachers, counselors, academic-job placement specialists, and paraprofessionals--delivers the program. Expected outcomes are: that students will assess their own interests, become cognizant about careers, learn a decision-making process, develop a career plan, and develop employability and job-seeking skills. The workbook contained in this document provides a blueprint for replicating this career education program. Its seven chapters provide step-by-step information on (1) goals and objectives; (2) planning (physical layout, staffing, budget); (3) coordination (linkages and support); (4) the counseling/assessment module; (5) the information module; (6) the placement module; and (7) evaluation. Appendixes contain copies of some pertinent articles, a list of resources available in the Whitman Center, and examples of materials used at the Whitman Center. (KC)
