These curriculum materials for preparing nursing assistants in Pennsylvania provide 14 units of secondary and postsecondary instruction. Presented within the topic of the role and function of the nursing assistant are units providing an introduction to health care, communications, infection control, emergency and disaster procedures, and ethical and legal responsibilities. Presented within the section on personal care and basic nursing skills are units on nutrition, common diseases and conditions of body systems, the resident's environment, personal care and grooming, basic nursing skills, resident care procedures, and death and dying. In the section on restorative care is a unit on rehabilitation. The section on mental health and social service needs contains a unit on the psychological effects of aging. An introductory section explains how to use the materials. Each unit contains a summarizing paragraph, a schedule for classroom and clinical work, a list of suggested topics of instruction, terms and their definitions, student objectives, an outline of course content, and a list of learning activities for each objective. Among the learning activities are suggested speakers, supplemental readings, page numbers of suggested quiz-test-study questions in textbooks, individual and group activities, and procedures specific to the course content. A 57-item bibliography is included, along with a list of 63 pamphlets and 184 audiovisual materials.
