Canadian Woman Studies = Les Cahiers de la Femme, v10 n2-3 Sum/Fall 1989
This journal volume by and about Indian, Inuit, and Metis native Canadian women, contains articles, interviews, book reviews, fiction, poetry, journal entries and art. It is dedicated to the grandmothers who managed to hold on to old ways, teachings, and feelings, and to pass them on. Poems and stories create personal portraits and reminiscences about grandmothers. Articles on history and tradition include studies of women in Huron and Ojibwa societies, native women and the fur industry, and a description of a birch bark artist. Studies on aboriginal language focus on the Anishnawbe language, a native language instructors program, native women and literacy, and education as empowerment. Social issues are examined: native women in prison, child sexual abuse, and an institute on alcohol and drug education. Articles describe Indian medicine and traditional attitudes toward pregnancy. Careers and futures for native women are considered in articles on the Indian Health Careers Program, an American Indian restaurant, native women's associations, photography, and counseling and development.
