Kids Count Data Book: State Profiles of Child Well-Being.
Center for the Study of Social Policy, Washington, DC.
This book presents state-by-state information on 10 indicators of child and adolescent health, education, and social and economic well-being. Indicators were chosen because they represented measures generally comparable across states and widely regarded as reliable. Indicators were: (1) percentage of births with no early prenatal care; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) percentage of babies with low birth weight; (4) benefits as a percentage of the poverty threshold; (5) percentage of children in poverty; (6) percentage not graduating high school; (7) teenage unemployment rate; (8) education expenditure per pupil; (9) percentage of births to teenage mothers; and (10) juvenile incarceration rate. Each state was ranked regionally and nationally, with ranks calculated separately for each indicator and summed for all 10 indicators to produce composite scores. The book also includes historical trend data on each indicator for each state. These data allow states to look at their current status in a historical context and identify both the direction and rate of state change. Data point to a large increase in the number of children living in poverty, and other social, health, and education problems in the lives of children. The appendix contains a summary of state data and rankings. Data indicate large and persistent differences among states on most of the indicators. (RH)
