An Experiential Approach to Outdoor/Social Education with EFL Students. Academic Reports.
Davies, Mark
The outdoor and adventure education component of the program for non-native learners of English at the Bell School in Bath, England, was designed to develop learners' social attitudes and skills through a range of outdoor activities and classroom encounters. The discussion of this program component is divided into four sections. Section 1 provides some background on what this social education achieves in developing attitudes, communication and social skills, group attitudes and skills, and cooperation. Section 2 outlines the structure of the learning experience, including the environment, activities, process of achieving outcomes, "bonding," responsibility for learning, review, and structures and techniques used. Section 3 describes the learning sequence, including such elements as entering the learning sequence, macro and micro development, macro level organization, certification and awards, conditions for achieving aims, and group size. Finally, section 4 identifies some practical program considerations in certain activities such as canoeing and mountaineering, outlines the advantages of week-long courses, describes the "promotions evening," and discusses the activities involved in selling social education. The section concludes with brief discussions of safety and an evaluation of the program. (MSE)
