In 1989, the Los Rios Community College District Office of Planning and Research analyzed data provided by the California Postsecondary Education Commission to compare district transfer rates to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems with statewide trends. Major findings were as follows: (1) statewide transfers to UC in the 1988-89 academic year showed a 20.6% increase over the 1986-87 academic year; (2) Los Rios ranked fourth among districts in the state in numbers of UC transfers (N=476) and first in the state if considering only fall data; (3) Los Rios ranked second among districts in the state in numbers of CSU transfers (N=2,229); (4) Los Rios transfers to UC increased 26.3% between 1987-88 and 1988-89; (5) full-year figures indicate that 2,229 students transferred to CSU in 1988-89, up 4.5% from 1987-88; (6) comparing fall-only data, the numbers of Los Rios Black and Hispanic transfers to the UC were up in fall 1988 compared to fall 1987, while Asian transfers were down; and (7) comparing fall-only data, the percentage of Los Rios Asian, Black, Hispanic, Filipino, and American Indian transfers to CSU were down. Findings indicate that transfer programs and intersegmental cooperation are necessary to increase transfer rates. An appendix provides transfer statistics of the Los Rios District by ethnicity, by full-year transfers to UC or CSU, and by individual college and ethnicity within the Los Rios district. (JMC)
