This document synthesizes information on the training of trainers of young people in the United Kingdom. The report looks at the situation in the United Kingdom in relation to career patterns, mobility in and between various types of training situations (in companies, in training organizations, and in the vocational education system), as well as the provision of inservice and preservice training. The report provides information to researchers and practitioners on material available on the subject and the points of contact for further information in member states of the European Community. Specifically, the document defines the process of trainer training, discusses barriers and problems, provides a selective annotated bibliography of 35 items, and then discusses training as an occupation, training qualifications, trainers and the Youth Training Scheme, trainers and open learning, and the question of educators versus trainers. The following appendixes are included: (1) a list of organizations directly concerned with training of trainers; (2) the Voluntary Registration Scheme (VRS) Code of Practice; (3) a list of VRS Network Members; (4) a description of support available for trainers and open learning projects; and (5) a directory of open learning packages for use in trainer training.
